Rotary Airlocks and Rotary Valves

Carolina Conveying manufactures rotary airlocks and rotary valves for all types of industries. We offer five types: the Heavy Duty Drop Thru Rotary Airlock Valve, the Side Entry Rotary Airlock Valve, the Blow Thru Rotary Airlock Valve, the Standard Duty Rotary Airlock and the Easy Clean Rotary Airlock Valve. Rotary airlock valves are used to feed product from or into a pressure or vacuum system. The rotary valve maintains an airlock by the closely, machined tolerances between the internal rotor and rotary airlock body. Below is more information on Carolina Conveyings four types of Rotary Airlock Valves.

Drop Thru Rotary Airlock

Drop Thru Rotary AirlockThe Drop Thru Rotary Airlock valve is the standard unit and used in most applications. These units are available in round or square. Carolina Conveying’s rotary airlocks are heavy duty design with thick castings, thick blade rotors with oversized shafts, outboard regreasable bearings and gland type shaft seals. Numerous rotor options are available such as: open end, closed end, fixed blades, adjustable blades, beveled edges, scalloped pockets, reduced volume, quick release, Teflon coated, abrasion resistant tips, flexible rubber tips, etc. Applications vary from bottom of dust collectors to pneumatic conveying. Sizes available: 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 30 and 36 inch.

Side Entry Rotary Airlock

Side Entry Rotary AirlockThe Side Entry Rotary Airlock Valve is used in applications where product shearing is a concern. The valve name derives from the offset inlet and outlet flanges, where the product enters the side of the rotor instead of the top. On a normal valve, shearing takes place as the rotor rotates into the housing. When these two straight edges meet on a typical drop thru rotary airlock, this provides a pinch area where the product can shear and/or jam. With the side entry rotary airlock, the product is caught on the upswing of the rotor blades so that the product is constantly falling away from the shear point. The rotor pockets also do not fill up as completely, additionally reducing the likelihood of shearing. Lastly, the throat has a V shape which helps push product out of the way. Sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 inch.

Blow Thru Rotary Airlock

Blow Thru Rotary AirlockThe Blow Thru Rotary Airlock Valve is used in pneumatic conveying applications only, both positive pressure and vacuum. Instead of a typical outlet, blow thru rotary airlocks include two ports on the sides of the valve near the bottom. The conveying line pipe connects directly to the valve, with the air stream flowing through the rotor pockets. This design is very efficient, and works well on materials that tend to hang up in the rotor pockets. However, this valve is not recommended on abrasive products as the vanes will quickly wear. This unit is also very helpful in applications that have height limitations. Convey line adapters are provided to suit the application. Sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 inch.

Easy Clean Rotary Airlock

Easy Clean Rotary AirlockThe Easy Clean Rotary Airlock Valve is used in sanitary or food applications where the valve internals need to be cleaned on a regular basis. This valve is also useful in non-sanitary applications that require product change over, such as paint pigments. The easy clean rotary airlock valve features a quick release rotor. With this design the rotor can be removed by hand, without having to disconnect the drive package. Hand knobs replace the end cover bolts for disassembly without any hand tools. Optional slide rails can support the rotor and end cover once it has been pulled apart.

Standard Duty Rotary Airlock

Standard Duty Rotary AirlockThe Standard Duty Drop Thru Rotary Airlock is a less expensive alternative to the Heavy Duty Airlocks, and is ideal for applications where a more robust valve is not required.  The Standard Duty Airlock is used in gravity flow or low-pressure differential applications such as on the bottom of a dust collector, surge hopper or silo, and are used for handling dry, free flowing, non-abrasive materials. These units are precision machined for tight tolerances, as with all of our rotary airlocks, to insure minimal air leakage. All standard duty airlocks are cast iron with a mild steel closed end rotor.  Both round and square flange units are available in the following sizes: 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch.

Special Size Rotary Airlocks

Carolina Conveying offers several unique and different size airlocks, from rectangular units to larger bore bodies for increase capaRectangular Rotary Airlockcity.  If you have a special size requirement, check with us to see what options are available.  Custom sizes can also be produced.

The Removable Gland Follower

Carolina Conveying offers a very unique design for the Drop Thru and Side Entry Rotary Airlocks: the Removable Gland Follower. Shaft packing has to be maintained properly to prevent product from leaking from the valve, especially in positive pressure applications. Any maintenance personnel will confirm how difficult this can be on the standard valve. Limited space typically requires the valve to be disassembled and the end cover removed for packing to be replaced.

Carolina Conveying has come out with a system that allows the gland follower to be completely removed without disassembling the entire valve or pulling the valve out of line.

How It Works

  1. The bearing is four bolt, flange mount, regreasable which is removed from the end cover.
  2. The gland follower is round rather than the typical elliptic style gland follower (see below).
  3. With the bearing removed, the round gland follower will pass through the outer bearing housing. This allows complete and easy access for maintenance.
